“Check it once, check it twice, check it again.” – Elias Fernandez, Shafer Winemaker

The lore of Shafer Vineyards begins with founder and former Chicagoan John Shafer. The Cornell alum left his role as a publishing executive in the Windy City to purchase a hillside estate in Napa Valley in 1972 with his family in tow. Soon after, he was joined professionally by his son Doug as winemaker—a role that would be passed to Elias Fernandez upon his hiring just a short year later. Together, the trio spent decades refining their production methods and perfecting their craft, catapulting the “Hillside Select” cuvee into international fame. Their commitment shaped the Shafer label, making it an emblem of meticulous care and passion in all aspects of the winemaking process.

Precision you can taste is winemaker Elias Fernandez’s working legacy, a gift to those who indulge in Shafer’s storied wines. Working alongside John and Doug Shafer for more than 30 years, he’s helped craft a signature style with marked opulence and a label synonymous with bold, rich, and balanced wines of worldwide recognition.

Shafer’s Napa journey started in Chicago over 50 years ago, and for one month they’ll make a return to their roots. This May, we welcome you to The Cellar Door at The Oakville Grill & Cellar to taste the beauty of Shafer wines and experience their journey.
